Buy-to-let tax relief is undergoing changes and will be phased in from 2017. This new system will increase your costs as a landlord if you own property in your own name, in partnership, or in a trust. If you’re a high rate tax payer – or if these changes push you into a high rate band – you will find yourself being affected by these changes.

Having lived in Lancaster for 25 years and being a Financial Adviser in the area for over 20 years I am delighted to have joined Burton & Fisher.
Michael, Lee and the rest of the team have made me feel very welcome and the chance to join a local community focused firm was too good an opportunity to miss.
I am especially looking forward to being able to provide independent advice and a financial review opportunity to former clients from my time at Lloyds TSB along with the pleasure of meeting and advising new clients.
I believe that this is an exciting time to work within financial services and the changes in legislation brought about by the FCA’s Retail Distribution Review will hopefully give clients the peace of mind and the confidence to seek independent financial advice when important financial planning is required. Customer service, relationship building, regular reviews and needs based advice have been the most important parts of my job throughout my career and I look forward to continuing to provide this high quality service to clients old and new in the local area.
For more information on either of these topics or any other matter concering independent financial advice, please contact us.
Struggling to speak to a Financial Adviser at your Bank?
Have you recently visited your bank to take advice on your savings and investments? If you have, you may have had a big surprise when they told you that they were no longer able to offer you financial advice. A number of high street banks have now taken the decision to close down their retail, face to face advice operations, for certain clients in branches up and down the country. Allegedly, the banks will still offer advice to wealthier clients with investments of hundreds of thousands of pounds via their private banking arms and will still continue to offer advice on protection products. But after several recent mis-selling scandals and new proposals by the Financial Services Authority via the upcoming Retail Distribution Review (RDR) to ban commission on investment and pension products, together with an ever increasing liability for compensation due to payment protection insurance and other mis-sold products, is there any wonder why they are shying away from the advice platform?
So where does this leave the customers on the street that still need advice on their savings and investment plans? Unfortunately they will now be directed to non-advised or execution only routes or they will be expected to go online and work things out for themselves! The downside to all of this is that many customers will more than likely either not attempt to take advice and suffer the financial consequences, or try to do things themselves and risk getting things wrong. If you have been affected by this decision and require advice then here at Burton and Fisher we have three Independent advisers who are committed to offering face to face holistic advice to clients. The firm can also offer Independent advice on mortgages, protection, equity release and care home fees planning.
Auto Enrolment – What does it mean for you and your business?
The government has introduced a new law to make it easier for people to save for their retirement. It requires all employers to enrol eligible jobholders into a qualifying workplace scheme if they are not already in one. At present, many workers fail to take up valuable pension benefits because they do not make an application to join their employer’s scheme. As automatic enrolment is meant to encourage people to save for retirement employers will have to enrol workers who:-
The cost of the reforms on businesses will be significant. The result will be that employees will eventually need to contribute 4% plus 1% tax relief of their banded earnings and employers 3%.
Companies with the largest number of employees will have the earliest staging dates i.e. the date by which employers will have to start contributing to a group scheme, starting from October 2012 running to 2018. The 8% total contribution will need to be made by 2018.
Although it seems like it is some time before you have to provide a work based scheme or enrol into the government NEST scheme, forward planning is essential. There are a significant number of options open to employers, both in terms of the providers offering group schemes and the way contributions are made. At Burton & Fisher we are here to guide you through your obligations to auto enrolment and explain the process of setting up the scheme as efficiently as possible. Please feel free to contact one of our advisors at our office on Princes Crescent in Bare on 01524 416511.
Residential Buildings & Contents Insurance
Anyone with a mortgage will know that buildings cover is a condition of the mortgage, so if you have a mortgage and your buildings insurance is with your bank why not give us your renewal date so we can see if we can help save you some money?
Lots of people do their home insurance online, without the need for interaction with real people. We can provide advice as to what you are currently covered for, and what additional covers you may need. Do you have personal belongings cover? Do you need it? These are all questions we can help you find the answer too.
If you have a renewal date, let us have it and we’ll call to arrange a quote nearer the time. You have nothing to lose.
